Good question. I don’t know. I would like to learn more about how node handles things on the IBM i. I can’t find much in the way of documentation at that level.

a = b + c in COBOL or RPG will compile to machine code

a = b + c in JavaScript will require to evaluate the content of b and c
to decide between addition or concatenation. It is more work, ¿will it
take much longer, or just a little bit?

Perhaps I have misinterpreted, but I heard some people in this discussion suggest that COBOL (via CGI?) will be as fast or faster because COBOL is native/compiled—which led me to ask if node on the IBM i uses the V8 engine to compile to machine language. I bet node on the IBM i *does* use the V8 engine to compile JavaScript to machine language. But this is one reason why I’m a little hesitant to rely solely on anecdotal observations. It seems CGI is being claimed as equally fast as node when knowledge/experience with node is much less than knowledge/experience with CGI.

The following are not rhetorical questions. I would genuinely appreciate hearing from you (on list or off list).

· Is anyone using CGI on IBM i for very high volumes of concurrent requests similar to, say, Walmart, eBay, PayPal, Amazon Brand Stores, or Netflix?

· Has anyone used both CGI and node on the IBM i and can speak anecdotally to comparisons between the two?
