1. Make sure both environment variables mentioned by Mr. Seeberger are set, and that the SMTP server was launched after setting them.

It's hard to justify why part of the SMTP configuration takes place within the configuration panels, and others not. Technically, outgoing connections aren't the same as incoming ones, but from a sysadmin PoV, I'd still expect the whole configuration taking place in a comprehensible manner instead of being cluttered around.
