Summary:
James, if you really want to get native IBM i support to go to gmail, etc you might want to open a case with IBM and see what they say.
Otherwise, look at using a different product such as Brad's.
Or look at using an intermediate server as a route through
Or look at using a service for malware/spam/etc which allows you to route through (like we do).
So many of us are using such services anyway so we've really not hammered IBM on the gmail type issues. This could be why the list is not as much help as you might like on this issue.

We built an on prem Linux based SMTP server to forward email to our
Google email account.
The on-prem server is used to pass our IBM i (AS400) email
CHGSMTPA FWDHUBSVR("on-prem_mail_server')
We do this for other servers besides the IBM i.

This morning, I was holding out hope that the problem was that theGoogle Relay hadn't yet "ripened." Still no joy.
