Back in mylar days we had one lpar which was off in an onsite data center which had no one willing to be daily operator in which we wanted a daily backup of a subselection of data. Instead of a VTL we used a virtual tape image catalog, which was also defined in BRMS. Then we would send that to a machine with local access to our mylar library and perform a DUPMEDBRM from virtual image catalog to physical tape. All automated.
Somewhere there is an IBM technote on doing this. Something a little more step-by-step than
https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/using-virtual-tape-ibm-system-i5
and it's section "Using Virtual Tape from Other Partitions"
