I think many have missed the point that Jim Franz is talking about a remote data center with no operator. This pretty much rules out all "physical" type media. No tape, rdx, sticks, etc. Basically nothing which does not automatically replicate to a different location in case of physical disaster at the data center.

When we first started out we only had one VTL. We had set up replication to a data center hosted by US Signal. They had a like VTL and ours would replicate to that. This may affect your choice of VTL! We liked their DC so much we ended up moving one of our on site DC's to that site with our own VTL. We are using another of their DC's in a different state to separate our production box from our HA box. Actually this last statement will be in effect by the end of the month as we move an onsite DC to that DC.

IDK costs and stuff as my boss handled all that though.

Jim, I wonder if the DC you're using has such a VTL which they would let you connect to (for a fee of course)?
