What's the business value between:

+1: maintain PASE

and
V5R3: custom build Apache HTTP server for i
V5R4: maintain limited PASE, maintain HTTP

7.2: maintain PASE, maintain HTTP, custom Node.js, custom Python

custom Octave

What you're describing (obviously you recommend the first picture)
sounds great. I am completely with you on that idea, in principle.

But what if (and I'm not saying this is the case, just posing the
question) the requirement that PASE is meaningfully integrated with
native i too deep an architectural problem to "just fix PASE so it's
close enough to a real Linux"? By "meaningfully integrated" I mean
integrated enough to provide a compelling reason to use PASE rather
than, as Nathan points out, genuine Linux on a separate partition or
machine.

Obviously, if PASE cannot be made Linux-like enough without breaking
the native i integration, then there isn't a way around custom
versions of at least some of the other packages.

And *if* that's the case, then maybe IBM is doing the next best thing,
which is providing an increasing number of building blocks (to varying
degrees of "custom") to gradually fill in the gaps.

Note that I carefully say Linux and Linux-like above, because I get
the impression (I'm no expert) that AIX is among the quirkier Unixes,
and thus might not be the best ultimate target for PASE, even though
that's what it was originally designed for. And you (Buck) did mention
that you'd like to see PASE be more like Linux.
