I do have a Passport Advantage account. I pre-downloaded the software and created a repository (using the Windows version of IBM Packaging Utility) because I didn't want it downloading during the install.

Do you have a passport advantage account, you should be able to install it directly from there to. You have installation manger installed, correct.

Yes, that's the name.

I like that tool a lot. My only complaint is that I can't install WAS
on IBM i using console mode. It has to be done using a full command
line, or a response file. :-(

Maybe need to research using IMCL?/ Think that is what it was called.

That's really close Jack, thank you, however they changed the
installation procedures for WAS 8.5, and the documentation there is
for 6.1.

It depends on your point of view. The PTF process just
complicates Installation Manager. If you manage it on its
own, it's even
simpler in
some regards than licpgm/PTF. Installing the product and
all
available
fixes can be done in one pass, and applying applicable fixes
is
similarly
straightforward.

Aaahhh I wish for the simplicity of an LPP and options, but
alas,
no they
are not features in the sense that they show up on the
display
licensed
program list. Base WAS does yes, but not the supplemental
products.

I am so glad Zend decided to use the Licensed Program and
PTF
route to
load and update Zend Server. It's so much easier than WAS.

Yes WAS uses a PTF, but then you have to update the
installation
manager,
then run the script to apply all the changes to the server
while it's down. That can take "some minutes" as Larry likes
to
say.
That process is nearly as awful as the original installation.
If
you get
an error which happens quite often, you have to be a Java
Guru to
figure
out what went wrong and correct it. Usually it's a
misspelling of
one of
the options, or a missed dash or something like that, but
it's a
bit of a
task to find it.
