Installation of RDi is peculiar, (i.e. via Installation Manager) but reliable and relatively quick. (I still prefer to download the local installers for IM and RDi, but installing from the website would be quicker.) It's no worse than any other large, complex item of PC software.

As for setting up a connection to your employers IBM i - only you can determine that. Others have furnished some good advice.

Now consider this. One of the unsung virtues of RDi is it's support for working disconnected, particularly when editing code. Does your existing connectivity at least enable you to transfer files to your home PC? Or maybe access the file system of the work PC as a mapped drive? If this is possible, then you can copy across source code and work disconnected on your home machine using RDi.

Not a perfect solution, but you would be able to take advantage of some RDi features. Just a thought.

However, I've also realized that there are some advantages in using the old
tools. Or should I say there are some disadvantages in using RDi. One of
those is the time it will take me to install it and try and set up the
connection. With the knowledge that may not be successful.
