Here's the thing, (and I agree it's mighty confusing - so maybe some of the IBM folk could explain?).

My experience has been that you purchased an Authorised User Licence + SW Subscription & Support for the first year - for a large-ish sum. Subsequently, the SWSS could be renewed annually at a cost of around 20% of the first year and provided access to 12-months of support and any updates and new releases/versions. The SWSS made the product more affordable over the longer term.

Looking at the IBM RDi website now, it states the "Authorised User Perpetual License Term allows indefinite use of the software with access to 12-months support and any updates. Support is renewable." However, it also specifies a fee of "$1,180.00 USD per license PER YEAR".  This suggests the full Licence figure is payable EVERY year !!!!!!

I have missed something, somewhere? When did this change?

I can quite understand how individuals (freelancers) would find RDi unaffordable if they have to pay this amount of money EVERY year!!

Mike/Edmund. Perhaps you would clarify? Have I got my facts or interpretation wrong?

Brian.

Apparently I never drilled down far enough. I was on the website

https://www.ibm.com/products/rational-developer-for-i/pricing

which states

Starting at
$968.00*
per user per year

Now that I've clicked on the purchase now button, I see there is an option
for an authorized user license at $1,180 that is not an annual renewal. So
I don't need to buy it every year but the version that I buy now will be out
of date by the time that I can use it again. Still not a good option for me
but thanks for the feedback that I was looking at the wrong price.
