Salut Dave,
I've been using the IDE since it only ran on OS/2, so I also have bad
memories of the installer with WDSc 4 and 5. But that was so long ago
- the current installer (IBM Installation Manager) is unusual by
Windows standards, but I can't remember having any particular issues
with it, and I think I know why. Back in the WDSc days, the average
business PC was pretty small in terms of CPU, cache, memory, and disk
speed. Even cheap laptops today are overwhelmingly more powerful than
the machines were back then.

As for using it from home, I too use a VPN to reach into my employer's
network from home. It's sort of the 'go-to' for working remotely.
