Honestly I do not know whether or not the Freemarker engine (actually the jar file) runs on Windows only. I could not find anything like that on the Freemarker project page at:

Maybe the Freemarker jar is too old? It is old (v2.3.23), but I do not think that is the problem. Beside that the plug-in requires a minimum execution environment of JavaSE-1.6. That should not be a problem, too.
Are there any errors when attempting to install the plug-in? Does the Eclipse error log contain something interesting?
