I do try to put spaces around operators. That doesn't take care of
parentheses, where I **don't** usually add spaces.
about white space; why should we?
We care because none of our editors is 'variable-aware'. And so because
we can't 'search for variable named customerID', we write our source
code to include extra spaces:
count = getCount ( customerID );
We structure our code to suit our editor instead of structuring our code
to suit ourselves. That doesn't seem optimal.
