I think I understand the idea of 'variable-aware' - Visual Studio with VB code keeps the same name throughout, and will modify all instances when you change case on even one letter. It also does enforce some white-space stuff.

The matter of white-space around operators is a readability thing for me. It's just easier to look at. My use of "bad" was meant to be mildly humorous - hope I didn't fail to convey = heh!

The thing is, VB in its tradition is interpreted, hence, can be more easily handled for variables, IIRC. I still go back to the outline, and attempts to make it more "live". The outline IS variable-aware, even to knowing which names come from /copy members.

Does any of this bear on this RFE? I hope my comments are helpful. I did just vote for it, BTW.

I don't think any coding style is bad per se. The compilers don't care
about white space; why should we?

We care because none of our editors is 'variable-aware'. And so because
we can't 'search for variable named customerID', we write our source
code to include extra spaces:

count = getCount ( customerID );

We structure our code to suit our editor instead of structuring our code
to suit ourselves. That doesn't seem optimal.
