The other thing I find useful is to filter on a selection - in an editor, drag across some text, right-click, click on "Selection", then click on "filter" - that gives me a better chance of working through false positives.

As to the symbol table that Buck mentioned in another post, it seems that the outline knows where everything is. I see all the places a variable is used (defined or maintained). Now it does seem based on the compile listing, but if it can be done for the outline, it seems it'd be available for refactoring like this.

And you're right, I face the same situation. Many times I've said, I've got to fix this so I know next time what that was for.
But, there are also the times when there is no time. And like Vern adding a character or a space sometimes makes it easier - searching for (2) instead of 2 for example.
