Add in the wildcard search (%) and suddenly your users can type in partial words.  Very useful for when "dang... they live in Portland" and it's really So. Portland.  Or South Portland.  Or S. Portland.  Or "I want everyone in zip code 12345."   Or "Give me all the 'Esq's."    Or even "Give me all the 'Smith%' in 'Seattle'."

What about adding a line below the column headings for filters. Enter a value in one column and filter the records by that value for that column. I do this all the time for the subfile programs I write. It allows the user to remove from view the records they are no interested int. Most of the time, one or two columns is all it takes. The record they want is on the screen with minimum paging required.
