One problem with these program-described or internally-described files is, they have not been able to process files with null-capable fields - least, last I looked.

There's been a utility around for a long time, by Julian Monypenny (spelling?) - he uses this technique - and it kills me on just this issue of more modern database usage.

Anyway, I define my generic program-described updatable keyed file like
this:

FDTAFILKIU UF A F 5000 120AIdisk UsrOpn InfDS(FilDS4)

This file is overridden to the actual file being processed. I've checked
and it does indeed work with composite keys where the key fields may be out
of order and may be spread throughout the record format.

Of course, since my program must be totally generic (because I have no idea
what file will be processed), I dynamically retrieve the field information
using API's and dynamically build everything as I go. works perfectly, but
probably overkill :)

Does this work on a file which has a multi-field key?
I haven't tested it, but I suspect it would work since the key is defined
as a data structure, which obviously can have multiple sub-fields. Somebody
should try that.

How about if those fields aren't contiguous in the record format?
Use a LF in the "f" spec? Again, somebody should try that.
