Does this work on a file which has a multi-field key?

I haven't tested it, but I suspect it would work since the key is defined as a data structure, which obviously can have multiple sub-fields. Somebody should try that.

How about if those fields aren't contiguous in the record format?

Use a LF in the "f" spec? Again, somebody should try that.
