The key length is specified in the F-spec = I believe it has to start in position 1 of the record, but I can't say that for sure.

The data structure merely overlays wherever that key area would be.

How about if those fields aren't contiguous in the record format?
Use a LF in the "f" spec? Again, somebody should try that.
