LVLCHK(*NO) would likely be in and OVRDBF, right? So it doesn't have to affect every program that uses the file.

Least ways, that's what I'd do - IF I did it at all - never a CHGPF!!

It could come down to preference. When you recompile a program that uses a file that was changed, the length mismatch error between the "f" and "d" specs may remind you to add code to properly initialize the new columns.
