For my part, I tend to use subprocedures only where I need a "middleweight" call (i.e., heavier than an EXSR, but lighter than an external CALL). Like when I need parameter passing, local variables, or recursion, but don't want the overhead of an external call. And when the need is sufficiently acute to be worth the trouble of not being able to use the default OPM activation group (except through *CALLER). -- JHHL
