Hi Jenny, The logic cycle first hit me (in the head) when I had already entered debug on a program and needed to see what certain values were right after the read.... but I couldn't find the read! Still a little fuzzy on when to "break" right after a read but along my path I believe I've discovered that at the first 'C' spec. the record has already been read. Maybe I'll have to break out the old IBM logic cycle and specifications template from the early 90's. (That should take a few of us back...) As someone said... "Welcome to our world" or should that be "Welcome To The Machine" (to quote Pink Floyd!) Have fun with your level breaks, Capt.j -----Original Message----- From: Mauger, Jenny [mailto:Jenny.Mauger@Zelana.co.uk] Sent: Friday, May 24, 2002 12:59 AM To: 'rpg400-l@midrange.com' Subject: RE: Difference bet. Primary and Full procedural file. Dear All, Thank you for all you responses to this post. As a 'newbie' myself I had read about the logic cycle but in manuals that described what the cycle did fairly briefly. I have yet to come across it in programs. Also like others on the list I was always warned off the cycle by more experienced programmers. However, having read your mails I agree with Doug, this looks like a brilliant way to code level breaks. I have a program to write that could use this very well, maybe I'll have a go at coding using the logic cycle today... It is much easier to see what is going on at a glance. I think anyone arguing that full procedural file breaks are easier are just trying desperately to cling to their corner. As a beginner I find it takes far longer to work out what is happening in a do it yourself code than in Doug's example. Also as someone fairly new to programming I find it surprising when people say why code in REXX when other people won't know it, why maintain SQL code if your an RPG programmer, why learn about the logic cycle if it wasn't taught etc. One of the best things about programming is learning new things isn't it? That's what keeps the mind interested. Thanks, Jenny _______________________________________________ This is the RPG programming on the AS400 / iSeries (RPG400-L) mailing list To post a message email: RPG400-L@midrange.com To subscribe, unsubscribe, or change list options, visit: http://lists.midrange.com/cgi-bin/listinfo/rpg400-l or email: RPG400-L-request@midrange.com Before posting, please take a moment to review the archives at http://archive.midrange.com/rpg400-l.
