Leslie,
Get a grip. Many of the folks on this list have as much love for
the AS400 as you. But the reality of this is that love and loyalty
and support will do nothing to change IBM's marketing of the AS400.
The sad fact is, despite its reliability, capabilities, and
support, management feels that IBM is taking advantage of them. The
IS director here feels that IBM is holding him hostage. Right or
wrong, that's what will drive him to seek alternatives. It's IBM's
call.
I make my living programming AS400s. That has been my choice. I am
NOT going to try to do IBMs job of promoting and marketing the
AS400. I WILL show off the platform's strengths whenever I have the
oportunity. The problems isn't with the AS400, its with IBMs
pricing and marketing.

The very fact that you do you job either adds or detracts from the
popularity of the AS/400. How you do you job shapes others opinions of
you and the platform you work on.
It is sad that you have no loyalty to a great box, and even more sad
that this is this case obviously with many in our industry. It is funny
that when you look at some of the most popular platforms you see nothing
so reprehensible as fence sitters. Folks either love or hate Winblows,
love or hate linux, ( hate unix :) but with the AS/400 people who should
care just don't.
This kind of attitude which permeates our corner of the computer
industry is a slap in the face to people like Brad Stone, Bob Cozzi and
Robert Tipton who actually do care and are working to change things. And
from the response to those efforts there are a good many out there who
would like to see things change.
