So long as the use of older hardware and an older OS for development doesn't cause *incompatibility* issues (which is largely just a matter of avoiding hacks and remaining alert for anything that does come up, I don't see anything wrong with it.

Would you prefer the distressingly common alternative of software vendors shoving end-users onto upgrade treadmills?
