But 8 characters instead of 10? Why? Would this be because ADDDIRE
was limited to 8 characters?

We do not use the entries in WRKDIRE for storing email addresses. We
do not use QDLS. In fact, our newest users aren't even in WRKDIRE.

I know that WRKDIRE allows you to point the 8 to a 10 but, since we do
not use WRKDIRE for anything it's a rather useless piece of trivia.

Any other reasons, other than WRKDIRE, to limit id's down to 8
characters? Some obscure open source reason or some such thing?
