Can you think of any reason why they should be only 8 characters? Our current security policy says: "The id you create should be the first character of the first name and the first 7 characters of the last name". There's more details in there to handle stuff like adding Susan Smith and Sam Smith.

But 8 characters instead of 10? Why? Would this be because ADDDIRE was limited to 8 characters?


We do not use the entries in WRKDIRE for storing email addresses. We do not use QDLS. In fact, our newest users aren't even in WRKDIRE.


I know that WRKDIRE allows you to point the 8 to a 10 but, since we do not use WRKDIRE for anything it's a rather useless piece of trivia.


Any other reasons, other than WRKDIRE, to limit id's down to 8 characters? Some obscure open source reason or some such thing?
