We used to also limit to 8 characters to simplify working with WRKDIR.

But several years ago we increased the limit to 10. We did not encounter any problem.

The only thing to watch for that I can think would be home made stuff (like customized signon screen or displaying the user id in an application screen) where the programmer would have used 8 characters variable instead of 10.

Objet : User id format

Current user id's are limited to 10 characters on IBM i. You may have an opinion on whether or not that should be increased and that's ok but I'm currently looking for a shorter term solution I need to implement without having to wait for a new release, etc. So let's just go with the 10 character limitation for now, ok?

Can you think of any reason why they should be only 8 characters? Our current security policy says: "The id you create should be the first character of the first name and the first 7 characters of the last name". There's more details in there to handle stuff like adding Susan Smith and Sam Smith.
But 8 characters instead of 10? Why? Would this be because ADDDIRE was limited to 8 characters?

We do not use the entries in WRKDIRE for storing email addresses. We do not use QDLS. In fact, our newest users aren't even in WRKDIRE.

I know that WRKDIRE allows you to point the 8 to a 10 but, since we do not use WRKDIRE for anything it's a rather useless piece of trivia.

Any other reasons, other than WRKDIRE, to limit id's down to 8 characters? Some obscure open source reason or some such thing?
