Just to expand a little more on the save file thing in case you haven't run across it -- save files have a record length of something like 528, and RPG can read it just fine as a program-described file. If you've saved the single file to a save file, then it's matter of reading through it and finding the record in question and resetting the delete flag. I have a vague recollection that it's the first byte or two set to x'ffff'.
