As far as the backup goes that is something you work out with the cloud providers. I bet none of them use physical tapes. I do not find physical tape to be a valid media for customer distribution. There are too many varieties of tape drives in use and if you try yet another RFE to get a standard tape drive in the main unit for media distribution that will be shot down in flames. Standards are a funny thing; they keep changing. I too had a tough time imagining life without physical tapes. When we replaced our huge LTO media library with a VTL I pretty much insisted on a small LTO library just in case. We got one but it never got hooked up.
I believe you are seeing the light that most of your concerns are a control issue.
I will say the only legitimate argument you brought up was "We also like to show potential customers what the box looks like". Of course this could widely vary. A standalone unit, a 1U or 2U rack mounted unit, multiple units, expansion units, etc stacked together. With or without SAN. A LTO library with enough expansion units to take up it's own 36U rack. And the list goes on.
