If you're on V6R1, then you may get Gmail to work if you use that for
corporate email with MAILTOOL, but not with IBM's SMTP server. But not for
long as they may update their SSL Certificate to one that uses a newer
cipher not supported by V7R1 and down.

I do have customers on V7R1 that got it to work, but I make sure to let
them know, if it stop because of a new SSL certificate, they've been
warned. :) V6R1 I am not sure what ciphers are available there.

If you plan on staying on V6R1 and want emails to go out consistently , I'd
look up a web service that offers SMTP without the ssl/tls requirement.

Chris made a good point too. It may be the server receiving the email. IF
it is Gmail in this case, I have never seen a delay that long. So it could
be the IBM i resending the email over and over and over until it finally
works (but why it woudln't work before who knows...). But that's hard to
track down on the IBM side of things. Super easy with MAILTOOL.

I'm just offering my advice. I wrote MAILTOOL years ago to solve these
problems with web hosted email servers like Gmail, office 365, hubspot,
etc.. I wrote it for myself. I had customers needing it, offered it to
them, and they've never looked back.

Just my .02. Just trying to help. Not much more I can add.

OP said " We have our work email through GMail.".

That leads me to believe they should also be sending email through GMail
from their IBM i.

Right, except that as you said earlier,
GMail requires TLS/SSL and authentication. I know IBM added some of that
in V7R2 or maybe later. But it's clunky.

and as I said earlier, this is a V6 box.

Now, our ISP is Spectrum, and our web hosting service is Pair. (I don't
dream these things up: at home, my ISP, personal email, and web hosting
are all through Toast.net [and were formerly through the local Quik
franchisee, until the whole Quik franchise system collapsed a few years
ago]). And we used to have an SMTP/POP3 server on-site.
