It really all comes down to the combination of client and server. LS isn't an ftp command, and results may vary. FTP from your IBM i to itself. Issue an ls and then issue an ls -l Then ftp from your IBM i to the IBM delivery server at delivery01-bld.dhe.ibm.com. Issue the ls and then the ls -l Completely different results.

IBM i FTP is pretty classic Unix FTP, which latter has dir, ls, cd, lcd etc.
If IBM are following anything, they're following the Unix party line.
The NAMEFMT stuff is SITE stuff. SITE-specific commands are part of the FTP spec. NAMEFMT matches z/OS and z/VM.
If there's any part of IBM i that is unsurprising to a Unix weenie, it's FTP.
