Some of this is a little dated (they call it an AS/400 after all).
Depending on what they will actually be doing this could be a starting
point.

I have also used an older version of "Mastering IBM i" that might be useful
as well. (I have not used this since Jim Buck updated it, but I am sure it
only got better).

If they are pretty much going to be doing to be doing help desk type support
(in no particular order- I am thinking mostly of the calls that come into
the help desk and you are not available at the moment things that they can
resolve themselves or capture to provide you with trouble shooting
information):
-Reset passwords
-Restart writers
-Capture (and talk a user through how to capture) error (CPFxxxx) codes,
create dumps and similar things that will be helpful to you.
-Responding to MSGW and LOCW jobs
-Structure of the environment (library, library lists, object, member, file,
field, record).
-Backups (if that will be part of their job responsibilities-even if just
for vacation coverage)
-Jobd
-object authority (the book mentioned above has an entire chapter on this
topic that is among the best explanations have I found), including adopted
authority
-work with job (understand associated libraries, files and stack) so they
can help capture the information for bigger trouble shooting
-getting and reading a joblog

Provide some step by step instructions and don't overwhelm them in a single
setting.

subject: What to teach someone new to IBMi

I have been asked to help a new employee.

They have a Linux, Unix, Windows background and never met the awesome i.

Their role is support.

I have worked with IBM midrange since the early 70's but have not done a
lot of one on one instruction.

A lot of you have.

Any words of wisdom or more specifically any suggested agenda or methods
or comments ?

Appreciate any suggestions.

Thank you

Don Brown
