Sounds like the big order entry program in IBM's DMAS software. It was a
nightmare to modify and keep the compiled object size below 64K.

At my first job we were coding in RPG on an IBM/360/20/5. Our invoicing
program filled up the compiler, so we were constantly looking for ways to
save a few bytes. Reviewing the program and making 'efficiency changes' was
a normal activity.

One of the first things I learned to do was actually use the Boolean Algebra
course I took, and convert "01 02 03" coded on multiple lines of code to
"N01 or N02 or N03 GOTO end of that group." This automatically resulted in
programs with little 'subroutines' built-in. Coding in 'subroutine-sized'
blocks of code became habit out of necessity! (: Placing subroutines in
individually-compiled programs was a natural outgrowth.

Pascal was the language taught in my first computing course, so the
concept of nested procedures has always seemed normal to me.

I recall trying to find out how to code a nested function in C when I
first encountered it. That frustrating experience is is stored in the
same place in my memory as my attempts to create a library within a
library when I first encountered the AS/400.
