I disagree with this characterization. It's common in scripting
languages such as JavaScript, Python, Ruby, Perl, PHP, and Lua.
Among "traditional" compiled languages there is pretty much the whole
ALGOL family, including Pascal and Ada.
More modern compiled languages such as Scala and D have them; C#
recently added them.
Some current Lisp dialects, such as Common Lisp and Scheme, have them.
It's not as unusual as you make it sound.
