I hate keyboard wedge devices. Forces your shop processes to flow by a
workstation. Or you mount a laptop on a forklift.

There are numerous wireless scanners out there which will display a
quadrant of a 5250 screen. You MAY want to redesign your screens to fit
in that. Nutech offers something that will remap screens (even without
source) to fit. A wireless unit or two placed strategically within the
plants has to cost less than a laptop, and, with less maintenance. I did
hear of one place where the scanner had to pay union dues though. Helped
when some ape on the floor intentionally damaged it and the protection
racket (oops, I meant union) made him pay for it.

From someone here who handles this:
We use Intermec CK31ex. We have the imager models. If they will never
need to scan 3D barcodes, I'd suggest NOT getting the imager models due to
slower scanning, shorter range, and in our case, more maintenance.
