We have 8 IXS cards in our 570. It's rather nice to be able to change the disk used without dropping the server. The speed of the vlan kicks butt, and doesn't tie up other lan resources. We use TSM, running under PASE, to back up these servers, and several other servers and clients. TSM comes with certain Enterprise packages. There is a story about a company that put 31 or 32 IXS cards in an iSeries. They looked at a SAN, however, the tape capabilities, etc of the iSeries (i=integrated) convinced them to go that route. This was a company that did NOT previously have an iSeries. I'll see if my boss remembers who that was (he's on this email's BCC). http://www-306.ibm.com/software/success/cssdb.nsf/advancedsearchVW?SearchView&Query=(Windows+Integration)+AND+[WebSiteProfileListTX]=eserveriseries&site=eserveriseries&frompage=ts&Start=1&Count=30 or http://makeashorterlink.com/?L180228CA Other general iSeries success stories http://www-1.ibm.com/servers/eserver/iseries/success/ Rob Berendt -- Group Dekko Services, LLC Dept 01.073 PO Box 2000 Dock 108 6928N 400E Kendallville, IN 46755 http://www.dekko.com "Graap, Ken" <keg@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent by: midrange-l-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx 03/30/2005 12:18 PM Please respond to Midrange Systems Technical Discussion <midrange-l@xxxxxxxxxxxx> To "'Midrange'" <midrange-l@xxxxxxxxxxxx> cc Subject xSeries and iSeries integration - ROI I'm looking into the benefits of consolidating our Windows server environment (currently about 125 servers) into an iSeries / xSeries configuration. Before anything like this would even be considered my manager would need to understand what the return on investment would be over time. Even though I see lots of wonderful technical reasons for moving in this direction I would need to prove that it also could save us money over time too. Has anyone out there prepared an ROI analysis on this subject that they might be willing to share? Also, has anyone actually planned and implemented a server consolidation using IBM iSeries and xSeries? If so I'd love to get some information from you on how you convinced your company that this was a good idea.... Kenneth **************************************** Kenneth E.
