We send our spool files using Infoprint server, but your concept is good.

We delete ALL spool files over 90 days old. Some people had to be slapped
into submission, however the lesson was that a spool file is not a valid
place to store critical data - it is NOT backed up. And we sure aren't
going to automatically email all spool files over 90 days old prior to
deleting them. Some people would just create a folder for these type of
emails and store them forever regardless of the content. PDF's do tend to
suck up some email space. We'll load the gun, turn the safety off and
hand it to the users - they're still required to shoot their own foot
though, if desired.

RE: Restore QSPL to get back spool files

Well for the future................
We have accounting people here who have many spool files out in their outq
and for many months and they do not want to get rid of them, because they
do
go back and look at them or audit purposes.
Our solution was to buy a product from Advanced Systems Concepts called
Esend. This allows users to email the spool file to their email address
as
a pdf and then they can save it to their hard drive or a cd or both.
This works well for them and they love it.

Esend also has some other additional features that are very useful too.
You should check it out go to WWW.ASC-ISERIES.COM or call them at
847-605-1311 ............. it is priced very nicely.

Thanks a lot for all the answers. I had suggested that we might not be
able
to retrieve the deleted spool files. The PM contends that he has restored
QSPL before, IBM is very iffy about this procedure. Just wanted to know if
there was any truth to the suggestion.

Unfortunately this is a situation where the users are not ready to lay out
the money for a reasonable jukebox for backing spool files to, and when
they
are not available, it becomes mission-critical.

Thanks a lot again.

Pillai
