What? Are some of us not good enough? Do you know anything about
others situations? Why would we want to pass judgement on each other
this way? I'm a 1-person shop. VP of IT. Been here 29 years come this
May 21st. Started work here 1 week after my high school graduation
before the company even had a computer. I installed (helped an IBM SE,
actually) the first one after 1 year of college. Would you say that my
work experience is pretty atypical of those in the information systems
world? I would say mine is about as weird as you can get.
Being a 1-person shop means there is no one else here to ask a question.
No one. And there is no such thing as your local IBM SE these days
either. These forums _are_ my shop.
I could answer more questions than I do but most of the time someone
beats me to it. I can't tell you how many times a newbie type question
is asked, I answered, and by the time my answer was posted, there were
already 14 other posts preceding mine with another 12 to follow after my
post. Sometimes I simply make the judgement not to answer because I
know there will be a flood.
I have succeeded in this job because I am a business person first, and a
computer guy second. The longer I am in this, the less I realize I know.
