We are not yet on a release that supports Free, but I'm looking forward to
the day we are. My problem is that I have many program templates written in
RPGIV that would require great effort to convert to Free. While I would
love to use Free, I can't see going to the effort of converting these
templates. That leaves me with using Free for stuff which my templates are
not suited.

Has anyone created a conversion tool for this?

I don't know if there are other advantages. Not being tied to columns is
huge for me. The biggest reason I preferred COBOL over RPG IV in school was
the ability to indent control levels. It makes it easier to see what happens
when a particular condition is met. I do not need to use as many
abbreviations to get meaningful variable names. For me just those two steps
toward generating more readable code were worth the minimal effort needed to
move from RPG IV columns to RPG free-form calc specs. But I might not be so
gung-ho for free form if I were using SEU as an editor instead of CODE/400.
