I don't know if there are other advantages. Not being tied to columns is huge for me. The biggest reason I preferred COBOL over RPG IV in school was the ability to indent control levels. It makes it easier to see what happens when a particular condition is met. I do not need to use as many abbreviations to get meaningful variable names. For me just those two steps toward generating more readable code were worth the minimal effort needed to move from RPG IV columns to RPG free-form calc specs. But I might not be so gung-ho for free form if I were using SEU as an editor instead of CODE/400. Lest this start a holy war, let me clarify: this is MY personal preference. Your mileage may vary.
