Joe,
        my boss had a very similar thing happen to him when he upgraded
one of our customers to V5R1.  He ended up calling support line and using
the per incident option ($250 for a one time incident - doesn't matter how
long it takes).  They had him make some change which then enabled the
upgrade to continue.  However talking to him just now he says he is not
sure if he had to completely restore from tape or not.  The support call
was worth it - he spent around 12 hours on the phone them!
