I have to agree with your point on Windows. Any software that I get for the
AS/400 should not have any Windows requirements. Especially when you would
have to install stuff on every pc in order to use it. This definitely trims
down the products that I have to evaluate. With all else being equal, a
product that is solely AS/400 based will get my blessing over one with
Windows requirements everytime.

I have found that the closer our environment is to the AS/400, the less
likely that we will have problems. Someone here suggested a pc based
barcode product that should be used instead of the AS/400 in case the AS/400
went down. Well, considering the AS/400 doesn't go down unscheduled that
often, it was a bad choice already. The pc product was extremely slow and
basically was scrapped. Finally, they are considering the AS/400 options
for doing this.

Keep things on the AS/400 and it will keep running.

You didnt address it to me but I can see several reasons for not getting it
out of the box. However, one reason is sufficient for me.

It requires Windows.
I dont think that Windows should be a pre-requisite for programming on the
AS/400.

CODE/400 has some good things like a programmable language syntax checker.
But if IBM added that to SEU - then 'the community' can keep SEU uptodate
with new languages - if 'the community' can see the benefit of doing so.

Disclaimer:
Im not bashing windows - I find it indispensable until I can move everything
to Linux. I just dont want to be tied to windows in order to program on the
AS400. (Isnt the _point_ of programming in Java that it's
platform-independent?)

PS I dont think that Windows should be a pre-requisite for programming on
the AS/400.
