Eric is correct. However, we do plug the customer order number into our
Serial# master file as part of the Offline Shipping process. Since we had
to write the user interface to get the transactions into OFFSHIP, we just
added a scan of the barcoded serial number. In fact, we scan the barcoded
serial number to identify the part# that is being shipped! It's that
critical to our business that we can follow a serial number from initial
start of production all the way through to retail and warranty activity.
Especially since the TREAD act was passed.

The only thing MAPICS really provides is the ability to hand-key the serial
number during Shipment Processing. And if you are using the Offline
Shipping enhancement, which I believe Dale is using, that function does not
even allow you to enter Serial numbers there.
