I would like to be able to create a menu item for xt5250 (or x5250) but this is tricky if I have to add a host to the command line.
That is not tricky at all. You can always use tools like Kommander to wrap the call of tn5250 into a nice dialog that allows you to select various options. Kommander is for KDE, but you could also do something with a little shell script and "dialog" or "whiptail". http://kommander.kdewebdev.org
