Regarding backups you can utilize the save while active feature on the save commands. This will permit users to be on during the backups. The down side is there is a noticeable performance hit when a user tries to access an object when the system is establishing a sync point for the object. Exclusive object locks will also cause backup grief as well. Alternatively you could install data mirroring from either Data Mirror or Vision where by the data is mirrored to a second AS400. This would be more expensive and complex however it would permit achieving 24/7 operation. This solution is excluding custom modifications that may be necessary to your nightly processing.
