These sorts of solutions can work. One MUST MUST MUST Test them of course and do so on a recurring basis. All it takes is for you to realize you didn't journal some critical bit (such as a data area with key incrementing numbers for example) and your 'recovery' fails.
Additionally you must also consider the time it would take to recover using this method. If the recovery is successful and you can afford the extended recovery time then it's a solution that works for your business. If it doesn't then you have spent time effort and money on nothing.
