Thanks Jim.
I understand your point.
It is a challenge putting a proposal together to get this i5 upgraded to a Power 8.
Adding in the need for a second box will not be meet with enthusiasm.
What I want to cover is losing the box at 3:00 in the afternoon and have something current to restore from as of that point.
Currently the network is replicated to an in-house AND outside appliance.
I am just trying to get the same scenario for the IBMi side of the world.
I know it's not the best it could be but I have to work within the constraints I am given.

What's going to drive the storage without a system? All the application level replication (any Vision product, QEDD, iCluster, etc) will require a system at the other end.
If you go with SAN you could have another SAN that you use PowerHA on the SAN to replicate it but without a system to attach to it what's the point?
I think your goal might be more closely achieved but using a VTL that is replicated to a remote facility. Then in a DR environment you'll get a system quick shipped from IBM and continue with a bare metal restore from
the remote VTL. You're still down for at least a couple of days. Even
that sounds like a lot of money for not much bang. A CBU box does not double your costs, except in the hardware and even that can be minimized.
I'm thinking a readjustment in the goals might be in order.

Being I am putting together this proposal I want to throw in DR.
What are the best options of live replication?
I know MIMIX is a big player, what are your opinions?
We will not have a DR system, just want to get the live data replicated.
This may include an appliance in the IT vault (Raised floor, walls 18"
thick, fire doors, halon).
Owner may want another appliance at offsite to replicate the replication to.
Thanks!!!!

I like the Storwize option HOWEVER one must understand the difference in type of I/O for IBM i vs Windows/Linux block file systems. As a consequence of that difference you should not mix Windows/Linux data and IBM i Data on the Same Drives on the SAN. They can be in the same drawer but dedicate some drives for IBM i and other drives for Windows/Linux.

Hi All,
Would like to solicit some opinions about configuring a new box.
We are currently on a i5 (P10) with 32gb ram and 845gb usable dasd.
I am looking at putting in Power 8 P10 with 64gb ram and 2.4tb of SSD
drives.
An option is putting in a Storwise rack for the drives so that it can
also
be used for the network.
If I put in the Storwise I would either put spinning drives or SSD up
to
around 9tb.
Has anyone worked with the Storwise doing what I am thinking about?
Thanks!!
