Actually, the upgrade to V5R2 is not an absolute necessity, but it does
make for a "safer" conversion.
We converted from a 620 at V4R5 to the 520 at V5R3 in one step.
We did just as Jean Claude mentioned, we started the 520, installed LIC,
OS/400 and LPPs, configured the network, then did the Restore from the
620.
There are a few gotcha's with things that won't convert/restore, but
mostly minor (at least for us).

You will need to first upgrade your 820 from V4R4 to V5R2 and THEN to
V5R3, you can't upgrade in one step, as you need to be at a Min release of
at least V5R1 to go directly to V5R3. Therefore its two steps. Also,
make sure you have a Current set of CDs for V5R3 and the latest Cum CDs.
THen and only then when you are on V5R3 can you save the 820 and restore
it to the 520.

Life is always so much easier when moving from one machine to the other
and you are on the same release.

Hello,

I will have something similar to do soon : Migrate from a 820 in V4R5 to a
520 in V5R3 (of course). Does it mean I have to migrate my 820 first in
V5R2 before saving and restoring on 520 ? Is there a simplier way in my
case ? I thought I could simply start my 520, install LIC, OS/400 and
LPPs, configure network and then restore CFG, PRF, *NONSYS, DLO,... from
820.

Thanks.

Hello Al,

Determine what are the correct LPPs for V5R3. IBM keeps changing their
names and designations to insure that they never get any name
recognition.
>3. Double check that you have no improperly coded trigger programs.
The best way to see which files have triggers is to do DSPFD to an output
file, and query the output file.
>4. De-install all LPPs on the system except for QGPL and QUSRSYS.
This will save you time in the long run. When I de-install lots of LPPs,
I submit batch jobs multi-threaded to do this in parallel.
>5. Get the latest CDs for V5R2, and install LIC, OS/400, QGPL and
QUSRSYS. Skip any PTF's unless required. There is 1 PTF that you will
need for V5R3 that comes with the V5R3 media, so put that on.
>6. Immediately install V5R3, and all required LPPs. Do not say
"Install All", because it will. Tick off the LPPs that you want. You
will have to hang around during the LPP installs to "Accept License
Agreements". This is new for V5R3, so you may want to read up on it.
You cannot "Accept the License Agreements" in advance (preferred method)
for the LPPs, because they weren't there.
>
This is not quite true, the "required PTFs" that come on an extra
CD-ROM give you
a menu similar to those upgrade preparation menus when converting from
CISC-to-RISC.
You are able to accept the license agreement(s) from there in advance and
I didn't
need to babysit that upgrade to press the F14-button to accept them on a
one-by-one basis.
There was a memo to users describing that process.

methodology, and it took 12 hours on a 720. Based on speed of processor,
it could take longer, because of "Accepting the License Agreements".
