So, given this, how do I get started? What steps are required in order
for me to get a machine up and running wherein things are "intuitive"?
This s a real question, because I would like to get a CVS server up, and
not CVSNT.

I don't claim to be an expert, but I'm running RH9.0 with KDE. I tried Gnome, but it seemed really buggy. KDE works fine. If you just tell the RH install to load you up with everything, I think you get a CVS server automagically. If not, you can download it from RH (currently cvs-1.11.2-10.i386.rpm and/or cvs-1.11.2-10.src.rpm.) Also, the RH updates are great. They're worth the price of a subscription ($50 I think), although you can get them for free if you're a real tightwad. For learning about the system, buy a couple of books and spend a weekend or two playing. Some good ones are "Running Linux" ISBN 1-56592-469-X (O'Reilly press) and SAMS "Teach Yourself Shell Programming in 24 Hours" ISBN 0-672-32358-3. "Running Linux" is a little dated, but still very useful for the extreme neophyte (like me). I've also found "Linux in a Nutshell", ISBN 0-596-00025-1 (O'Reilly press) a very useful command reference.

Linux with X (KDE or Gnome) isn't quite as slick looking as WinXP, but it works, it keeps getting better, and once you start to figure out where things are, it's a whole lot easier to manage than ANY Windows box. You do need to learn some cryptic command stuff. No big deal. Bottom line is it works, it's decipherable, and it's not anybody's proprietary child.
