Joe, there's a distribution by Libranet, based on Debian, that promises very easy installation. A free version (2.7) can be downloaded. Current version is about $65 for new customers. I got it some time ago. See it at <www.libranet.com>. But, as someone wrote, Debian does not directly do RedHat RPM packages, and IBM is packaging their stuff for RedHat, it seems.

You can get more info at <http://www.linux.org/docs/ldp/howto/Deciding-Linux-HOWTO/about.html>, which is an introduction, with some comparsions of distributions. Also has comparisons to Windows.

I'm not trying to be flip here, but these instructions are a little
beyond the "stick in a disk" installation of Windows. Even a phrase as
simple as "Just create the boot diskette" makes several assumptions
about the skill level of the user.

I think I could do it, although I'm not sure. The funny thing is that I
have a copy of SuSE 6.4 that I bought the last time I was going to "get
Linux" <grin>.
