IMAO, based on years of running Linux, OS X is what Linux wants to be on the desktop: a clean, powerful, robust, Unix-based OS that the average person can easily install, maintain, and use. Apple got it right. I say this as a former Apple hater. I thought they were overpriced and underpowered. Until OS X, they were. I'm typing this on a PowerBook G4 (the 12-inch version), and it was the second Mac I've purchased: my main user workstation at home is a flat-panel iMac (the one that some folks think looks like a lamp). I've sent M$ the last dollar I ever will.
