I've used NetBeans a little for an IDE - I'm not that familiar with it, but it is free, as I recall.

I also highly recommend getting the Firebug plugin for Firebox - there's a developer here who is quite expert in web stuff, and he does his coding in a text editor, then tries it with Firefox, then changes things in Firebug to see what happens. Very powerful combination.

There's also the HTML Validator plugin that can be very helpful, in my experience.

Hi Mike,

Yep, Sitepoint have some great Javascript books (see previous posts) and
they also have a book on JQuery (JQuery: Novice to Ninja) which I think
you can grab a PDF of for $10 at the moment.

They also have a Javascript course - which is really good.

Vern is correct - you will need some knowledge of CSS to get to grips
with JQuery. I also recommend that you get a basic knowledge (at least)
of CSS before starting Javascript - since a lot of what you will be
doing with Javascript is manipulating CSS values.

Good free IDEs for Windows (most of them cover HTML, CSS and Javascript)
are HTML-Kit (my favorite for Windoze) and Kompozer. In Ubuntu there is
Bluefish. And, if you happen to be using PHP on the i, Zend Studio will
also fit.

I asked this on Twitter already, but want some more opinions.

Is W3Schools the best location to get a firm grasp of the basics of
JavaScript/jQuery? Should I learn the basics of JavaScript first? (

What OS X IDE do you like for JavaScript/jQuery/HTML editing? Free is better
for me.(http://twitter.com/BizDevTalk/status/17904366474)

I am ashamed to admit that I have done very little JavaScript development
and thus have avoided it as long as I could. Now one almost has to know
JavaScript to do any amount of web development.

Thank you guys for any direction on this. Tonight I am going to try to do a
cram-course on JavaScript 101.
